Claude’s watermarks: what they mean for your SEO strategy

In August 2026 Anthropic began watermarking text generated by Claude, to comply with the EU AI Act. The watermark is invisible: it subtly shapes word choice so only a holder of the key can detect it, and Anthropic reports no measurable quality difference. Heavily human-edited text carries little watermark, and detection doesn't identify users.

What it means for SEO

  • Nothing changes overnight - Google rewards helpful content, however it's made.
  • Human authorship becomes more valuable: bylines, credentials, first-hand experience and editorial review are visibility signals.
  • Use AI for research and drafts; make the final word yours.
  • Expect more labelling across platforms. Build a content process you'd be happy to have disclosed.
